Linda Baston-Pitt, PurpleBee CEO, shares her thoughts, insights and advice

It’s always a special pleasure and honour to have the opportunity to present certificates and celebrate with learners who have completed one of our programmes. On this occasion it was doubly special as the group of Early Years professionals from an award-winning nursery in Cambridgeshire were the first ever to achieve the new PurpleBee Positive Leadership Award (ILM Accredited).

The award is the first of its kind and has been created specifically to meet the needs of new or aspiring Early Years leaders. We developed the qualification in response to the growing demand for a bespoke Early Years Leadership and Management qualification that was current, relevant and accessible for busy practitioners.

The decision for the nursery group to invest in leadership training was due to a number of reasons as the nursery manager explained:

One of the most important aspects of any early years setting is the quality of its leadership. We recognise that our leaders set the tone and are critical to the development of a nurturing environment that supports staff to meet their full potential. It was important for us a part of our succession planning to create a leadership career map that supported the ongoing CPD of our current senior team and to also to help us to identify our future leaders.’  Lisa, Nursery Manager

Participants on the Positive Leadership in Early Years course were introduced to the principles and practice of the PurpleBee Positive Leadership Framework, which is a unique evidence-based approach to developing leadership skills and wellbeing in the workplace.

‘The three main takeaways I have from this course are to encourage reflective practice, the importance of realising and working with all team members strengths and the importance of pedagogical conversations within the room allowing members of staff to ask questions, reflect and learn from what they are doing and how this will help children to develop and meet their next steps.’      Louise, Room Leader

Through a series of work-based assignments, and with the support of a Learning Coach, the learners were able to use a range of practical tools and techniques to develop their positive leadership skills in their own practice.

‘A big attraction of the course was the Learning Coach that everyone had access to, the fact there was a designated person that was available at any time to talk too throughout the course and at regular points for reflection allowed the staff to progress through course with confidence.’  Deputy Manager

This course is part of the ILM Level 3 Unlock your Inner Leader programme and can be taken separately or in combination with Understanding Good Practice in Workplace Mentoring.
